BIARRITZ ECONOMY
Biarritz is located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département, in the Aquitaine region of France. Just 18 kilometres from the Spanish border, it is in the traditional province of the Northern Basque Country, Labourd. The economy of Biarritz has long been dependent on the sea: initially as a whaling settlement and fishing port from the 12th century onwards, then in the 18th century doctors recommended their patients make pilgrimages to the therapeutic ocean at Biarritz to cure their illnesses.
Through the mid 18th century, Napoleon III and Eugénie’s presence in Biarritz ensured that the economy thrived as they poured their wealth into establishing their summer home. Biarritz’s success was consolidated and tourism would become the basis of the economy until the present day.
Biarritz now has its eyes focused on a stable future with tourism as its economic mainstay especially in the business arena. The town has paid particular attention to developing its reception facilities in which to hold congresses and trade fairs, seminars and sales exhibitions.
In order to retain and attract custom, the town has also invested considerable effort in the conservation and beautification of its exceptional site. Greatly encouraging culture in all its expressions, the council of Biarritz has successfully implemented an extensive calendar of events, exhibitions, festivals and shows, attracting a wealth of visitors to this spectacular coastal haven.
Finally, development of the sporting activities and facilities of Biarritz especially in the areas of golf and surfing draws amateurs and professionals to its beautiful shores and courses throughout the year.
