A Brief History of Bordeaux

Part 2: Celtic Bordeaux
In the third century BC, a Celtic tribe from the North of France, the Bituriges Vivisci, settled on the outer bank of a broad bend of the tidal Garonne River. With the river’s crescent-shaped “Port of the Moon” opening to the Gironde Estuary, this settlement was always destined for trade. Called Burdigala, which is probably of Aquitainian origin, the settlement was a key stop on the tin trade route. It is from these humble beginnings that the prosperous port and city of Bordeaux developed, a city built on trade.
